Two men posing as African refugees are scamming business owners with a fake cash scheme.
They present business owners with white or black sheets that when washed in a chemical appear to be $50 Canadian bills. The scammers claim that is the only way they can export the money from their country of origin.
In some cases, business owners agree to sales in the thousands of dollars.
They later realize they've been duped with pretend money — defrauded with white photocopy or black construction paper.
“This is a well documented scam, known as the black money scam, with different variations out there,” says Det. Dennis Tetreault with the city police coordinated counterfeit squad. “We ask that if anyone is approached with this scam to just walk away and report it to police.”
The scam can be reported to the EPS non-emergency complaint line by calling 780-423-4567
